How we calculate it

Show the assumptions behind the estimate
  • Purchase estimate = ⌈tiled area ÷ tile area⌉ × (1 + waste), rounded up. It is a recommended planning estimate, not a guaranteed cut list.
  • Layout preview clips five pattern geometries to the surface. Full and cut pieces are shown when there are no untiled-area deductions.
  • Waste starts at 10% for grid and brick, 15% for third and diagonal, and 20% for herringbone. You can override it.
  • Grout uses tile perimeter, joint, thickness and 1.6 g/cm³ density. Adhesive is a planning rate of about 3–6 kg/m² by tile size.
  • Tile cost uses the price mode and currency you enter. It is not a total project cost and does not convert exchange rates.

Pattern starting points

Straight grid

Tiles line up square. It is the calm default with the least pattern-driven cutting — about 10% starting waste.

Brick offset

Each row shifts half a tile, like brickwork. It suits slightly out-of-square surfaces and starts near 10% waste.

Third offset

A one-third stagger suits long tiles and avoids the visual rhythm of a half-offset; it starts near 15% waste.

Diagonal

The grid turns 45 degrees. Perimeter cuts increase, so it starts near 15% waste.

Herringbone

A woven zig-zag for rectangular tiles. It has the most cutting and starts near 20% waste.

Tiling questions, answered

How many tiles do I need per m²?

It depends on the tile size: a 300×300 mm tile is about 11 tiles per m² before waste, while a 600×600 mm tile is about 2.8. This calculator uses your surface and tile area, then adds the waste for the chosen layout.

How much extra should I buy for waste?

The starting allowance is about 10% for a straight grid, roughly 15% for diagonal or third-offset layouts, and around 20% for herringbone. You can edit the waste setting and keep spare tiles from the same batch for repairs.

Does it include grout and adhesive?

Yes. Grout is estimated from tile size, joint width, tile thickness and a 1.6 g/cm³ density. Adhesive uses a planning rate of about 3 to 6 kg per m² by tile size. Confirm the product label before buying.

Do you store my measurements?

No. The calculator runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Your last layout is remembered only in local browser storage, and a share link keeps its settings in the URL hash.

Can I use it for floor and wall tiles?

Yes. Enter the surface width and length for a floor or wall, then subtract doorways, windows or islands with Add untiled area. The estimate and layout preview use the same geometry.
